Luminarie in Kobe

Last Sunday, I went to Kobe and enjoyed Luminarie. It was the first time for me. Although I arrived there one hour before starting Luminarie, there were alredy so many people and horrible long line. I was surprised at the number of people. However, I could get the illuminated road without stress or annoyance. The illumination was so beutiful. I really enjoyed it so much. Of course, I raised one hundred yen for Luminarie.

For Competitions

Last Saturday, I was surprised because our aikido teacher said that we had to start to practice some skills for Kansai and National competition. So we practiced some difficult skills for the competitions, and we also practice skills to get upper kyu so as to enter the competitions. Anyway we have to practice more and more to get prises.

Favorite Novel ③

Today I'll introduce one of my favorite novels: "失踪HOLIDAY（the Disappearence Holiday）" written by Otsuichi. I'm so sorry to introduce only his novels, but I like his novel very much. This novel contains two stories.

"幸せは子猫のかたち(The shape of happiness is like a kitten)"

This story is about a boy who is not good at communicating with others and retires into himself and a girl who is alredy dead and invisible to people.
The boy moves to a new house and starts his campus life. However, he has some mysterious experiences in his new house; Things are moved to place different from where he put, and TV channel is changed without notice. He finds a room seemed to have been used by a girl, and he realise that there is the girls ghost. However, she never tries to scare and harm him. She just live there as if she still be alive. Then they start to live in the house together, but one day, he realzes an important truth.

"失踪HOLIDAY(the Disappearence Holday)"

This story is about a girl, Nao. She lives in a very big house with servants because his father is a prsident of big company and rich. However, she is not his true daughter. Her father got married to her real mother. So Nao is her child by her former marriage. However, Nao did not care about that until her mother died. After her death, she suddely felt fear fo being kiched out by his father because she is not his real child. After sevral years, he got married to other woman, Kyoko. Nao can not get along with and often quarrel with her. One day, she gets angry at her father because he supported Kyoko. So she runs away from her house, but actually, she just hides herself in a house for survants by threatening one of survants, Kuniko. After some days, she thinks that her father may be worried about her and goes back to her home. However, she sees her family looks happy even though they get lost Nao. She is so sad and decides to pretend to be kidnapped by sending a letter to her familly and she keeps hiding hersel in a Kuniko's room. And the happening caused by just a hoax becomes a big incident latter.

Wedding

Last Saturday, I went to Tokyo because my oldest sister celebrated a wedding. It was the first time for me to join a wedding. So I was really looking forward to the wedding.

We went to Omote-sando where the wedding was going to be held. I had not been there before and I did not know about there. So I was surprised at the dense crowd. It was not to be compared to the crowd in Osaka, I thought. I don't like to walk through the crowd, so I was exhausted when I got to the hall. (A picture of OMOTE SANDO HILLS)

However, as soon as the wedding started I forgot tiredness and I was impressed by my sister because she wore a beutiful white dress and she was mede up beutifully. At the wedding reception, we had some events like watching movies about historis of bride and groom and film about ho they met and decide to get married. The latter fiml was made to imitate Ainori which is a Japanese romantic TV program and the film was so amusing.

I enjoyed the wedding, but I thought my family, my sister and her husband were very very busy both at the wedding and before the wedding. They had many things to do like addressing the people who came to the wedding, remembering the procession of the wedding and preparing things for the wedding. So arrangement for the wedding took about one year.

Anyway, it was very good wedding.

Response to a letter, "Common protection and control"

Today, I write a response to this letter, “Common protection and control”. This letter talks about fingerprint and photograph of foreigners arriving at Japanese air ports.

First, the author of the letter, Hideo Kaito, talks about a purpose of fingerprint and photograph of foreigners. He says that the measure is not carried out to violate human rights and discriminate certain groups of people, but to protect people from danger. This statement is used to impress a good image of the measure on people. Also this statement says that people who are bothered are only people having done or are going to do something wrong, so it emphasizes that general people have no reason to care the measure.

At the last paragraph, he talks about common security and self-sacrifice. He insists that people have to sacrifice their some freedoms and rights in order to maintain common security. To say the statement, he asks people that which is more important whether personal rights or safety for people around the world. It is a question style, but he does not intend to give choice. He forces people to choose latter one because no one can invade a right of saving life of others’.

Response to an article about fingerprinting

Today I will write a response to an article, “Not so welcome to Japan any longer”, written by Kevin Rafferty.

The article says that Japan introduces a measure of fingerprinting and taking pictures of every foreigner who came to Japan so as to protect Japan from terrorists. However, the author of the article, Kevin Rafferty, says that the measure is a violation of human rights and nonsense, so he insists that Japanese government has to discuss the measure thoughtfully again.

I do not think that fingerprinting is a violation of basic human rights and a meaningless measure. Fingerprinting just saves life of Japanese and, of course, foreigners to remove dangers. There is no reason your rights are violated. The government says that the measure protects people from terrorists, but it can remove other dangers like murder, theft or traffic committed by foreigners because police can find criminals or suspects easier.

Discrimination in Japan

I think that Chinese are discriminated against in Japan.

Of course, Japanese like Chinese food, actors, and sightseeing. Japanese also need the power of making products of China so as to make profit and supply cheaper products to consumers. The relationships between Japan and China should be good, but Japanese have negative images of Chinese.

First, Chinese make fakes and sell them far cheaper than genuine products. It annoys not only Japanese, but also people living in other countries whose products were copied. This is a big problem for other countries because fakes decrease profit genuine products are supposed to make.

Second, it is said that Chinese are so rude. TV programs broad cast how rude they are. For example, they ignore a line of people waiting something and cut in it, or they spit wherever they want.

As Mike Dewood who wrote this response said, it depends on the place which groups are discriminated, and I agree with him because discrimination relates to history and culture of place and people. However, talking about Chinese, the negative images of Chinese are well known to many Japanese because mass media spread them openly.

I have not seen such situation that Japanese throw stones to or swear at Chinese, but I have seen an indirect discrimination that some Japanese frown and step away from Chinese when the Japanese notice they are Chinese, probably judging by their language.

To conclude, I think Chinese people are discriminated in Japan although it is indirect way.

Response to the letter of Manuel Sandoval

Today I write response to this letter written by Manuel Sandoval.



The letter written by Sandoval is a response to this letter about U.S . marines who are suspected of raping a woman in Japan. However he talks about U.S. military located all over the world. It is not the topic the writers who wrote or will write resonses try to discuss.



He says that he have been there and knows about the place where the matter happened and the people living there. Why does he know that? Did he research all people living there? It is just a too personal view having little power because it impossible to research and know all people living there.



He said in his letter that "She must have known what kind of situation she was in from the get-go". Of course you should think careful your situation so as to avoid dangers, but it does not mean that people are allowed to rape a person if the person is in such dangerous situation. The people who comitted a crime have to be punished. Whether a victim was in danger situaton or not does not matter. However it is possible that the woman trapped the guys in the case they discuss, so police and the other related organizations investigate in order to bring the fact out, so it is not hasty judgement to investigate, it is reasonable way to investigate.


Talking about U.S. forces staying in Japan, he said that U.S. might take care of Japan too long time, but many Japanese do not think so. Japanese think that U.S. forces should retreat from Japan, especially Okinawa and people living near the U.S. forces bases think like that because they sometimes or often suffer from problems made by U.S. armies. Japan is not taken care of by U.S., but it is a reciprocal help. Japan gives amount money to support U.S. forces. In fact, America is afraid that Japan has a big defense power on its own by having their own forces to defend Japan. So America intefere Japan with making a domestic combat plane
. America forced Japan to allow America to join tha project to make a new generation combat plane. The reason is that America do not want Japan have big power and against America. So Japan does not need, but U.S. need to stay thier forces in Japan so as to control the region including Japan, China, Korea and North Korea.

Why I am in IES class

The reason why I am in IES is that I want to improve my English skills. In my high school, there were some teachers who came from other countries, mainly English speaking countries. I had many chances to talk with to them, but I could not because I was not good at speaking English and I did not have confidence in my English skills. I regretted that I did not talk to them. Then I wanted to study English more eagerly and chose this university.

When we took a placement test, we were explained that we could not use any Japanese during IES class if we joined IES program. So I though that it was a good chance to force me to use English usually. I think it is difficult to make an environment where we usually use English by me, because we need someone who help to make the environment. However, IES program offers me such environment, good lessons, and what’s more, people who are good at speaking English far better than me and have high motivation for studying English. I though the program would help me improve my English skills, especially speaking skill which was hard to train alone.

I don’t have any specific reason why I want or need to study English now, such as in order to get a job which needs high English skills. However I want to study English, and I also want to study other languages if I can because I want to talk with more and more people who are from not only Japan, but also other countries and have various ideas, senses of value and characters.

Crepe

Hello!!


Last Sunday, I made crepe at home because my circle will run a crepe stand on Gaidai Festival. So I wanted to know how to make and tried.

I prepared 100g of flour, 4 eggs, 400ml of milk, 30g of butter, tablespoonful of sugar and a little vanilla.


After that, I prepared strawberry and blueberry jam, oranges and peaches so as to put them on crepe.


I tried some combinations what I should put together in order to make delicious crepe. When we run a crepe stand on Gaidai Festival, we cannot use uncooked food such fresh cream or fruits which is not canned. Especially, fresh cream is a very important factor to make delicious crepe, so it was very difficult to make good one. Anyway I became good at baking crepe, I think.





I tried tasting many crepe, so I got tired of crepe and elt sick after that. However I will try to make good crepe again, may be.

Favorite Novel ②

Today I have nothing special I talk to you, so I introduce my favorite novel, "Calling You". Of course the story was written by Otsuichi.


A heroine of the story is a girl, Ryo. She is not good at communicating with others, and don't like such her characteristic. She does'n have a cell phone and she wants one because she thinks that all people are linked with others by cell phones. One day, she thinks waht kind of cell phone she wants, and imagines her own cell phone in only her mind. The more she thinks about her cell phone, the clearer the cell phone becomes. Then her cell phone rings, although it exist only in her mind. The person who calls her is a boy, Shinya. They start talking and gradually open up. So they decide to meet, however...

This was made into a movie and comic(the picture is a cover for a comic). So if you don't like just read words, it's better to read the comic or watch the movie, I think. The comic changes the original story, however the comic story is so good and I like it, too. However I have not watched the movie which also changes the original story, so I don't know it is good or bad.

This is heart warming story, so if you are irritated, stressful or very tired, this story may help you feel better. Please try this.

Response to The Article About Loanwords

I think loanwords are imported into Japan because they are useful. In a certain field, people working there can work smoothly with loanwords. They know meanings of loanwords, a kind of term, used in a field, so they can communicate with each other and understand what they want to say quickly. Loanwords, especially from English words, help workers to communicate with foreigners who involved in the same filed since sounds of loanwords are similar to original words and meanings of loanwords are almost the same as meanings of originals. Even though Japanese workers cannot speak English or other languages well, they can communicate to some degree by using loanwords which are common language.


Loanwords help companies very well, especially on the point of advertising their products. Loanwords sometimes, or often, more attracting than Japanese. By using loanwords, companies can make shorter catchphrases and can tell customers more information and good points of their productions. In fact, almost few companies do not use loanwords when they advertise their products.


However there is a problem that when politicians speech and use loanwords, some people cannot understand what they say even thought the speeches are important and have to do with all people. It means that some people may get losses because of loanwords they do not know.


We, especially media and things have to do with politics, have to be careful when we use loanwords, but I think adoption of loanwords as good and the words develop our way to convey information.

My Summer Vacation

As I said, I finally got the scuba diving license this summer. It was not difficult to get it, but took time and money. I went to one pool and two beaches to practice diving.




First I went to a pool at Shirasaki beach which was located in Wakayama prefecture and practiced how to prepare equipments, go in to water, and use a regulator which was a equipment supplying me air. I was very surprised and impressed because I could breathe under the water. But equipments were very heavy, so it was hard work to hump them and walk around. I practiced two ways to dive into the water. Falling into the water backward from bench and taking a big step to the water. I needed some courage to do the former because felt scared before dropping. Anyway I could do all skills I learned and practiced.

About one week after, I went to Otomi beach which is located in Hukui prefecture. It was not large enough for people who wanted to enjoy swimming, so there were only divers. That day I practiced skills I had learned at pool in the sea. So I saw some fish during practicing. The sea was a part of the Sea of Japan, so there were fish what I usually ate as meal. They looked beautiful and also delicious.



Next time, I went to Shirahama beach located in Wakayama. I think most of you know the beach because it is famous for its beauty and many people go there to enjoy swimming every summer. That day I enjoyed diving. I could see many fish like tropical. I also saw some sea anemones. In sea anemones, a fish, which was famous for the movie "Finding Nimo", lived. However the fish was not exactly the fish casted in the movie. The fish casted in the movie was named kakure-kumanomi in Japanese, but the fish I saw was kumanomi. Anyway it was beautiful colored. I could have very good experience to get a scuba diving license in this summer.

I took part in the Circle Freshman Camp and went to Hachi highland in Hyogo prefecture. The camp was held to educate freshman circle members and give them a chance to make good relationship with other circle members.



First day night, we cooked curry and rice by ourselves. We had not enough time to cook, so girls of our group cut ingredients smoothly and fastly. However guys, of course including me, could not make a fire easily. Eventually we became the latest group.



Second day morning, we started for the top of the mountain. The roads were kept up and it was not hard to walk, but as we went higher, the roads were rough and some people stumble and slipped. Finally we came to the top. However, though we had expected to see beautiful view, we could not see it because of thick mist. We got disappointed.



Afternoon, we enjoyed a kind of quiz game. The rule was that we had to go to rooms in the hotel and find some paper quizzes were written in. If we could get the answers, we could fill in crossword. Filling in the crossword completely, we got the answers that where was goal, and we went there. All of us were very excited.



In the night each group showed something like show. Some talks horror stories, some did like


quiz shows, and others tried to make audiences to burst into laughter. All groups were very amusing. The camp was more interesting than I had expected.



They are parts of what I enjoyed in this summer vacation.

Summer vacation !!

Finally, all first semester classes finished. However I have one test, political science., so I will study the subject. My summer vacation begins from next Tuesday. I'm impatient for the vacation.

What are you going to do during the summer vacation? My sister and I are going to get scuba diving license this summer. We have already finished studying about scuba diving, so this vacation, we have practical course and go to the pool and sea to practice diving.

I just watched pictures and movies on DVD and TV, but they were very beutiful and I wanted to go and dive into the sea. I don't know whether we can go to somewhere to enjoy diving, but we get the license because we have time this summer. I'm looking forward enjoy diving in the beautiful sea.

I will study Germany this summer vacation. I want to speak in Germany, so today I borrowed a text book to study Germany from KGU library. I will go to KGU and study something like Germany and English during summer vacation because I think I will become lazy if I always stay at home. I don't want to do it.

Favorite novel ①

I watched a movie "Waiting in the Dark"(暗いところで待ち合わせ). The original novel is writen by Otsuichi. I'm sorry that I talk only about him these days. The picture on the cover looks scary, but it's not horror. It's a suspense.

The story line is like this: A woman lives alone. Her name is Michiru and she got lost her eyesight because of traffic accident. One day, a murder case happens at the station near her house. The suspect is a man, Akihiro. He takes to the house where Michiru lives in, and try to hide. Michiru feels that someone is there and scared. She decides to pretend not to realize him in order to save herself. Then strange cohabiting starts.


I like the nonverbal communication between him and her. It looks strange but also interesting. I didn't feel seriously when I read the communication scene. Sometimes it looks comedy. After reading this novel, I felt a little sadness and comfort.



I recomend you that you read the novel first, and then you should watch the movie if you want because movie is lacking of some explanations, I think.

This is not scary story, so I think all of you can read this. I hope you read and like it. If you like this, I'm sure that you will like the other novels written by Otsuichi.

Surprising martial arts show

Last Saturday I practiced aikido, and it was harder than before because our instructor was very severe on that day. The reason why he was so strict then is traing camp that we are going to join. During the period, we practice with another colledge students and masters who are top classes in Kansai, Japan, may be in the wowrld. So we have to practice harder and harder to survive the trainig camp. And I'm going to take a tast to be promoted to be 5 kyu which is the first step next Saturday.

I think most of you don't know what aikido is and have not seen aikido. In fact I don't know what aikido is too. However I try to know it by reading books and researching by using the Internet. So I show you a interesting TV show which surprised me. The show is about Mr.Shioda, who is a great aikido master. I think some of, or most of you think the movie is made-up, but it's real.

Anyway, please enjoy the show!!

My high school

Hallo!! Some of you introduce your highschool, so today I introduce my highschool.

They are my classmates. There are only nine men in my class. People who belonged to Interenational-education course were class 1 or 2, and I don't know why but most of who entered the course had been girls since the course was established. There are 6 other class which are normal-course. However I think there are little differences between the classes. We were very friendly without regard to male or female, of course still now.

We were not bound by school rules. We could color our hair, have our ears pierced and wear own clothes, not school uniform. I really enjoyed the highschool life. All events, like sports festivals, school festivals and picnics were really exciting for me. My friends and I often stayed at classroom and chatted about study, what would we do after graduatinon, something funny happened these days and love. I had a lot of pleasant time with them.

I had played basketball. We did not have coach but only a teacher who always attended practice and games, so we thought practuce menu and strategy how to play. That was very good experience for me because when I was a junior highschool student, my coach was very severe and I felt like that I just played as he comanded. I learned a lot of important things from the experience.

My teammates are funny and good guys. They played basketball seriously, but after finishing practice, they were always full of fun. I like the team and teammates. You can find more information about Senri highschool to click here.

My favorite novelist

Today I'll talk about my favorite novelist, Otsuiti.

In 1996, when he was 17, he came out with his novel" Summer,fireworks, and my body (Natsu-to hanabi-to watashi-no-shitai)'. The novel won the prize of non-fiction Jump novel. In 2002, he wrote "GOTH" and won the mistery grand prix. After that, he have enjoyed popularity. Now the movie "Calling You(Kiminisika-kikoenai)",the original he wrote, is being screened.

He writes two completely different type novels. One is about case of murders and death, the other is about sad feelings.
Examples of the former are the novels I write above this paragraph, and I suggest you should read "GOTH" and "Zoo(this book includes the other type too)", if you can read very cruel scenes. The stories are very exciting and you will be deceived by the author.
Examples of the latter are "Calling you" and "Wave length of Lonliness". What I want you to read are "Future forecast ", which is written in " Wave length of lonliness", and "Calling you". The stories made me feel kind of sadness and warmth.

Baby hatch

Today I'll talk about "Baby hatch". That is a big problem in Japan now.

Letter One

She uses her experience that she has worked with children and their parents for a long time to make her points. By using it, she can emphasize that she understands their minds and feelings. So people can trust her and her points become persuasive.



Letter Two

She uses a piece of news that young girl and her boyfriend abandoned their child to make her points. The news is an example which describes feelings of parents who have a problem about bringing children up. It makes people sympathize them and her points become forceful.


My opinion

I don't think Baby hatch is good answer. We have to stop abandoning children before it happens. Baby hatch may save lives which might be killed. However is only saving their lives really good for them? I don't think so. Children saved by Baby hatch will be suffered from living without parents. I think it is so bad and sad not to live with parents at least during infancy. So before making Baby hatch, we have to think and carry out ideas which help the parents who are seriously suffered from bringing up their children. And also we should give them opportunity to learn and be trained for preparing to become mother or farther not only physically but mentally. I think it is good to teach youth what are parents too.

Osaka castle

The picture I have is only Osaka castle. So today I'll talk about the castle.

Last summer I went to Osaka Castle to make a report as an asignment. Have you ever been there? That was the first time for me to go there. At that time I was studying Japanese history, so I was interested in Osaka castle.

The castle looked not so big. It was small. Because it was rebuilt, there were many screens to show the story of Toyotomi Hideyoshi and the castle upper stairs. It had an elevator, too. They disappointed me because I wanted to see something old.

I could see some antiques down stairs. I wanted to take pictures of them, but it was forbidden. That's why I put only a picture of the castle. I don't have other good pictures. The antiques were very interesting for me. There were armor, weapons, letters, picture scrolls, and the replica of gold teahouse made by Hideyoshi. I thought the teahouse looked not so good. It was too brighted and my eyes felt tired when I saw it.

What impressed me most was the structure like defensive walls, batteries, and fosses. I thought there were great ideas of people who built them and comanders. I imagined the situation when the samurai were fighting.

What I ate

Today I want to talk about food what I ate these days.

Do you know this food? This is white curry. This looks like stew, but tastes spicy.

It tastes not as hot as curry. The tast is mild. So if you cannot eat hot curry, I think you can try this curry.

Because of its look and the mild taste, sometimes I feel eating stew.

I knew this food on TV and I wanted to eat this. So I tried to find it at the supermarket. I could find it easily. So if you want to try it, you may find it easily.

Aikido

Today, I want to talk about Aikido circle I belong to.

I go to practice aikido every Saturday afternoon. That is very interesting martial arts. We need not use power and, what's more, we don't use power. It means it is the best form when you are relaxed. We can also practice swordplay and rodplay. Last Saturday, I practiced them.

If you see the practice or the performance, most of you think that is sham or dance. However if you are attacked by the master once, your though would be changed, because I experienced such situation and I decided to join the circle.

There are many girls but only three men including me, so I look for male members.
If you are interested in aikido, you can easily watch the perfomance on You Tube or shomthing like it.

Commercial for POCARI SWEAT

I want to talk about commercial for POCARI SWEAT.

First please watch the following commercial.

~Target Audience~

This commercial is aimed at young people, because this commercial use young people. The main person is Haruka Ayase, and she is famous actressand talent. However, I think, old people don't know her. So this commercial effects not old people, but yong people. And this commercial is aimed at athletes, too, because this commercial is for sports drink, and people in this commercial play dodge ball.

~Authority~

First we can see Haruka Ayase as an authority because she is famous and cute. So people who see this commercial believe this product is good easily by her.

Second we can see the product's name and company's name, "POCARI SWEAT" and "Otsuka seiyaku", because both of them are already vary famous in Japan. So some people have faith in them.

~Emotion~

This commercial uses fresh images. This commercial shows pool, some water, people who play sports and laugh, and the blue sky. They make fresh feeling. The main color of this commercial is blue, and blue is generally associated with fresh.

What's more, this commercial has many cuts and the transition is very fast. So the commercial looks very actively and speedy.

Therefore this commercial provids fresh and energetic impression to the people who watch it and makes them buy the product.

~Logic/Information~

The infomation which this commercial contains is this drink is mainly for people who play sports,and this is sorts drink, because people in this commercial enjoy playing sports, and after that, the main person drink the product.

~Evaluation~

This commercial is not so unique or strange, but makes very good feeling, I think.

The scene in which people enjoy sports provides healthy and fresh impression to people, so, I think, they are attracted by the commercial and product.

The casting is good because the main person, Haruka Ayase, have big effect to young people.

The most surprising thing is that they mainly use blue in the commercial. Genarally, blue is not used for commercial for food, becaus the color doesn't make good impression of food. However, they use blue for drink effectively and succeed in providing fresh and healthy impression of POCARI SWEAT.I think that is big chalenge and great work.

On a scale of 1-10, I would rate this commercial a good solid 9.

The reason why I gave the 9 is that most people feel the motion that the company expects. To tell the truth, this commercial gaives littel information and convincing reasons, but that's not matter and this commercial is successful.

My name is Hiroki Ishiguro. I live in Osaka.

I have two older sisters, and they already work. The oldest sister graduated from Kansaigaidai and I heard that Kansaigaidai was good , so I decided to enter this university.
